A band saw can resaw boards accurately, but the fence must do more than provide a place to push wood. It needs to guide the workpiece while allowing for blade drift, uneven stock, and the sideways pressure created by a tall cut. A fence that is square to the table but not aligned with the…
Why a bandsaw blade drifts Drift is the angle a blade naturally follows as it cuts, even when the fence looks parallel to the blade. In a resaw cut, that small angle can leave a board wedge-shaped: one face is thinner at one end than the other. Drift is not always a sign of a…
How to Cut a Straight Circle on a Stationary Band Saw A band saw can cut accurate circles, but it does not do so by simply turning the workpiece against the blade. The reliable method is to make a circle-cutting jig that pivots the blank around a fixed point. The jig controls the radius while…
Choosing band saw blade TPI for curves in hardwood is mainly a compromise between clearance, control, and finish. A fine-tooth blade can leave a cleaner edge, but it clogs more easily and makes tight curves harder. A coarse blade turns more freely and clears chips better, but it can tear the grain and leave deep…
A band saw in a small cabinet shop earns its floor space when it handles jobs a table saw cannot do as safely or economically: resawing boards, cutting curves, and roughing out parts before final machining. The right size depends less on the biggest blade the machine accepts than on how often you resaw, the…
Cutting a large solid-wood panel to shape is one of the jobs where a band saw earns its floor space. It can follow a curved layout line with less waste than a jigsaw, and it is safer than forcing a wide panel across a table saw. The catch is that not every band saw has…
A fence helps with straight resawing, but it does not make a band saw cut straight by itself. Blade choice, setup, feed pressure, and the stock’s shape matter just as much. For most home shops, a 14-inch band saw with a tall fence and enough resaw capacity is the practical starting point. A larger saw…
Fine scrollwork in thick stock is a harder job than the word “scrollwork” suggests. Tight curves need a narrow blade; thick hardwood needs enough blade support and cutting capacity to stay on course. A saw with a tall frame can still struggle if its guides, tensioning system, or blade choice are wrong. For most shops,…
What the saw needs to do Windsor chair parts put a band saw to two different jobs. It roughs out curved shapes such as arms, hands, and saddles, and it resaws stock into thinner pieces for bent parts or laminations. Those jobs call for different blade widths and sometimes different saw capacities. A machine that…
A band saw with a tilting table can make long bevel cuts without tipping a large board against a narrow fence. The trade-off is that many woodworking band saws tilt only to the right, and table angle, blade drift and workpiece support all affect the result. Check the actual table-tilt range and throat capacity before…
